FAQ's - Frequently Asked Questions
What is a short haul move? This is a move that is less than 450 miles. Make sure to inquire with your moving company as you may have to pay long distance charges even for short haul moves.
What is a local move? This usually refers to moves that are less than 100 miles and within the same state.
What is an intrastate move? This refers to a move of more than 100 miles within the same state.
Can my movers disconnect my gas? No, movers are not licensed to disconnect gas so you will have to hire another professional to perform this service.
What is a Bill of Lading? This is an official contract between you and your moving company.
Does a moving company need to be licensed? Moving companies are actually registered. This means the federal government has issued them a certificate of authority that allows them to move household goods in any of the 50 states. Local moving companies may also be registered with the US Department of Transportation to move interstate shipments within certain geographical areas.
Should I disassemble my furniture before the move? You can do this if you have time, but it’s not required. If your movers need to dismantle any furniture, they will reassemble it in your new home.
Should my movers pack my breakables? We recommend letting professional movers pack breakable items because most insurance providers will only cover the cost of damage done to breakable items that have been packed by a professional moving company.
How soon in advance do I have to book one of your movers or packers? This depends on the availability. However, you should contact a moving company as early as possible once your moving date has been confirmed. The summer months are always much busier so you may require more notice.
Why do movers place shipments from more than one household on a trailer during long distance moves? This is much more efficient and allows the moving company to lower their costs. Direct shipments are usually available, but they will cost you more.
What should I do with the food in my fridge? You must empty your refrigerator before moving it, so we recommend transporting your food and other perishables in a cooler during your move.
Why is the cost for traveling higher for moving trucks? The costs of driving time are normally higher because moving trucks can’t travel at the same speed as regular vehicles on highways. They also can’t access any non-truck routes which results in longer mileage.
What are some examples of “extraordinary value” items? Although the list will differ for each person, your crystal, furs, jewelry, china, silverware, art or coin collections, crystal, antiques, precious stones and Oriental rugs will often fall under this category.
